We could have stayed in the gorge for a week, but the Macy crew needed to get upstream and we wanted to buddy boat with them (when possible this is best for added safety) so we motored with them, feeling like we where inside National Geographic magazine! We stopped at a local restaurant and then explored one of the tributaries running into the Rio.

Up the Rio Tatin we found a short jungle trek and some rapids but we were all feeling chilly and wanted to go in search of the hot sulphur springs (three tectonic plates create Guatemala's volcanic landscape) which all the guides say are hard to find. Further up the main river we found them! The rain hadn't ceased all day so we easily spotted the locals there enjoying the chance to warm up! They are directly opposite the mouth of Rio Tameja and the green rocks and strong sulphur smell give them away! It was a blissful dip of scalding hot or freezing cold water!
