News > Christmas in Guanaja

Our good reason for leaving has gone!

Well, our good reason for leaving has gone! Paul and Martha decided to fly to Roatan instead of sail with us and we got groaned at when we told people we were leaving already. So we have decided to spend Christmas here in Guanaja and sail to Roatan for New Year. We have made such good friends here and have been made to feel part of the family. We know...visiting one country in 3 months is slow going but we feel we have got to know the people and experienced some of the culture here and we love it!

One of our FAQ's is what happens if you get ill? There is no medical service in Guanaja, not even 911 or 999 to call if you need help. On the Cay we learned that 'jungle telegraph' (or word of mouth) is the way people communicate if there is an accident and then if it is serious, a person can be flown to the mainland for treatment.

We had our own semi-serious emergency in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Pete had the classic symptoms of food poisoning, but was also suffering from anaphylactic shock. He has gone into full anaphylactic shock in Cayman from being bitten by an ant, he lost consciousness, an ambulance was called and he was given a shot of adrenalin. It was something that had never happened to him before, but a combination of a day in the sun and dehydration was the possible cause. He now carries an adrenalin pen with him, most of the time!

On Tuesday we hiked up to the waterfall on the North side of the island (it was beautiful, photos to follow soon). Pete felt a bit fatigued in the morning and had a strange red rash on his chest which only lasted about an hour. Throughout the day he drank fluids, but he also sweated a lot and then for tea that night we had crab dip for starters and barbecued shrimp for the main course. We had decided to stay at Jacks that night and around 1am he had rushed to the bathroom with a bad stomach and got back into bed Then he got up again and although I was in and out of sleep I thought he had been an unusually long time, but I nodded off and woke to see him stagger into the room, drenched in sweat and barely conscious. He was having trouble breathing and his pulse was racing. He was scared he would go into full shock and was just trying to keep calm as his adrenalin pen was on the boat. I got him back into bed and he was shivering but burning up, not sure if it was Malaria or Dengue fever, or what it was. I convinced him it must have been the shrimp and reassured him 'til he finally went to sleep still with a racing pulse and shallow breathing.

It was pretty scary but also reassuring to know that if he had lost consciousness, Jack and Elizabeth were there and unbeknown to us that night, did have an adrenalin pen in the house (Jack is a pilot and used to do missionary flights into remote areas so is medically well prepared). Pete still had a fever in the morning but by Wednesday afternoon was ready for some chicken soup!
