Pete and Joel left Grand Cayman on Monday, flew to La Ceiba, bused to San Pedro Sula, over-nighted and bused to the Rio Dulce Tuesday. Kilifi has been well looked after at Monkey Bay Marina and Captain and boat are happy to be reunited after 6 months!
The first text from Pete in the Rio was about the engine starting (big priority!) oil changes and meeting up with old friends. They have both been working hard to get her ‘ship shape’ and ready for sea. I got an email from him this morning: -
"Things went quite well yesterday, really we need 4 new gel batteries as
KILIFI's are shot, but one was much worse than the others, so I got on the
net and found 1 (exactly the same) so we went for that. This morning,
everything (fridge, fans etc) seems to be normal, the crunch will come when
we get to use the SSB radio. Sold two scuba tanks and donated the other two
and some medicines to the jungle medic.
It will be a pity to leave Rio Dulce so soon, but we had a good time here
and it's time to go. Looks like we are on schedule for downriver Friday and
over the bar at Livingston Saturday. Currently no major weather forecasted
for us, but the winds are mostly going to be coming from where we want to
go. I'm inclined to make our track close to Guanaja (rather than Belize,
where some of the navigation can be tricky...) but either way we will be tacking all the way home.
Eager to get going now. Today is GPS antenna fit, back half of the boat
clean, deck layout - sails/jerry cans/windvane etc, dinghy inspection
(repairs completed yesterday)and last trip to town for fresh food provisions.
Lots to do, better go and make coffee!!!!"
