Tony (Claire's Dad) wrote a speech which sums it all up…
A Poem entitled from Rating to Mating
A poem by Claire's Dad (Tony)
I thank you all for coming
It really is a treat
To see you all together
So families can meet...Upon this great occasion
With Claire and Peter too
To celebrate their marriage
with this fine festive doThe phone rang "Hi Pops" came the call
I recognised the voice
"can you ring me back" Claire said
I seldom have much choice"Peter wants a word with you
I know you haven't met"
"Hello there" came a cultured tone
"My heart has now been set""I'd like your daughters hand to wed,
We'd like it to be soon"
I smiled and thought "Is he a nut?"
But now, over the moon"Ok if that's what you both want,
My blessing I can give
It seems a good idea to me
Especially where you live"We landed in the sun swept isle
The flight was very bumpy
I wish I'd been in Devon
To sup a pint of scrumpyWe landed in the sun swept Isle
The two of them were there
To meet us and I shook his hand
I'm mighty pleased - I swearThe two weeks that were spent with them
Were peaceful and serene
Except when out aboard the Yacht
Where Captain reigned supremeHe tamed the ants, he lost his lure
The one the fish like best
Claire threw his camera in the sea
That really was a testThroughout, the couple seemed so close
But he could show who's boss
Except when coming back on land
With short-term memory loss."I'll whistle where I want" she said
"My dear Lieutenant Commander
You can stop me, when we are at sea
but not on my verandah"The house is full of heart shaped stones
To signify their love
He even likes the monkey boy
Hurling insults from aboveIn Cayman Isles they formed a bond
To last them both through life
But Peter Charles, from THIS proud Dad
You've not just gained a wifeA teacher, trainer, athlete too -
Builder, bottom scrubber,
Artist, to name but a few
and now, an ex-landlubberThey've travelled far,
They've travelled wide
They both play many parts
But now that they have spliced the knot
Their journey really starts. So happiness and peace of mind
Important things you've got
Claire, more to think about you'll find
you now own half a yachtAnd so I ask you, raise your glass
Each person in this room
Stand up, and with me, if you will
Please toast the bride and groom!
